The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, announced that progress is being made in negotiations with the United States government to open avocado exports from Jalisco to the market of that country, which will benefit producers in this western region from Mexico.
The federal official announced that meetings have been held on this issue with the Secretary of Agriculture of the United States, Thomas Vilsack, and has shown interest in this regard.
"It is very likely that soon we will give the good news of the export of avocado from Jalisco, which will have an important impact for the state," stressed Villalobos Arámbula.
In the January September period of this year, avocado was ranked as the main agricultural export product, with a value of 2,187 million dollars, 5.55 percent more compared to 2,072 million dollars in the same period of 2020.
According to information from the Bank of Mexico, Mexican avocado exports ended 2020 at 2,936 million dollars, 0.15 percent above the 2,932 million dollars of the previous year.
The main export destination is the United States. Other markets that buy the Mexican product are Japan, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, France, China, the United Kingdom, Honduras, South Korea and El Salvador, mainly.
Mexico is the world leader in cultivation and export of this fruit, since it contributes one in three avocados that enter the international market, with a planted area of 241 thousand hectares and a production of two million 393 thousand 849 tons in 2020.
Michoacán leads the largest national production, with a volume of 1,800,021 tons. Other entities that have participation are: Jalisco, State of Mexico, Nayarit, Morelos and Guerrero, according to figures from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).
More than 60 countries in the world are producers of at least 500 varieties of avocado, the field of Mexico is the generator of the three varieties most appreciated by consumers: Hass, Criollo and Fuerte. ■
