5.9 magnitude earthquake strikes near coast of Indonesia

An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck about 203km (126 miles) south west of Nabire, Indonesia on Monday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The earthquake was at a depth of 13 kilometres (7.5 miles), about 180 kilometres northeast of Tual city, Indonesia's easternmost Papua region, according to the United States Geological Survey said, but there was no tsunami warning or reports of damage.

The earthquake was hit at a relatively shallow depth of 12 Shallow quakes tend to do more damage than deep tremors.
