6.2 earthquake hits northeastern Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude 6.2 struck eastern and northeastern Japan on Wednesday.

No tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The 7:51 p.m. temblor occurred off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of around 30 kilometers, the agency said.

The quake registered 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures.
