The operation was carried out in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday along the coast of northern Esmeraldas province.

Two suspects were arrested and would be charged soon, the office said via Twitter.

Police searched the vessel and found the cocaine hidden under the floor boards.

So far this year, the Ecuadorian authorities have seized some 60 tons of illicit drugs, mainly cocaine, in different parts of the country.

Last week, an operation uncovered more than half a ton of cocaine being shipped along with a cargo of bananas heading to Belgium.
