The number of irregular immigrants arriving in Italy this year has risen to 60,000, after being rescued in the Mediterranean Sea, the UN Refugee Agency reported.

According to the data published on the UN's official website, the total number of migrants who managed to reach Europe was 70,390, of which 7,069 to Greece, 3,201 to Spain and 302 to Cyprus, meanwhile 1,729 died in the attempt.

The number of migrants in Italy exceeds 48 percent the one registered in the same period of 2016, according to data of the Ministry of Interior.

Nigeria (8,120), Bangladesh (7,567) and Guinea (6,144) are the main nations of origin, even though, as it is traditional, nearly all migrants left Libya on fragile vessels as part of operations organized by human traffickers operating in that North African nation.
