"The activities of an international criminal group attempting to smuggle heroin from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan through the territory of the Eurasian Economic Union to Western Europe were suppressed," it said.

Two criminal cases have been initiated against members of the criminal group, among whom were foreign citizens from EU countries.

Russian law enforcement officers tried to cooperate with European colleagues on the matter. However, due to delayed decisions from the colleagues, they were unable to continue joint work, the customs said.

Due to this, the threat of heroin being supplied to European consumers remains high, it added.
