Although the full scale of the blackout is not yet known, thousands have reported a problem connecting to the service since 10:00 BST.

The latest outage comes hours after a blackout hit the service last night.

Microsoft addressed the latter on its official Skype blog, telling its users that it was “aware of an incident where users will either lose connectivity to the application and may be unable to send or receive messages.

“Some users will be unable to see a black bar that indicates them that a group call is ongoing, and longer delays in adding users to their buddy list.”

Some Skype users were still experiencing the issues this morning, Microsoft acknowledged.

However that number appears to have spiralled lately.
