"In some areas, the worst has probably been in recent hours, while in others this is still expected."
"Slovenia is in the grip of violent floods, which will intensify in the next 24 hours due to the arrival of new and new precipitation," Meteoinfo Slovenia reports on Facebook. "In many places in Gorenjska, Carinthia and the Idrija Hills, Škofja Loka and Polhov Gradec hills there is an emergency.
Due to heavy rainfall, rivers and torrents have crossed banks and flood on a larger scale. There are many places underwater and landslides are also triggering," they wrote.
In the last 12 hours, the worst downpours have occurred in the area of the southern foothills of the Julian Alps and in the strip from Idrija through the northern part of the Ljubljana Basin to Carinthia, where in many places more than 150, and in some places even more than 200 litres of rain per square meter.
"During the day, the centre of gravity of precipitation will gradually move above southern and eastern Slovenia, where more than 200 litres of rain per square meter can also fall. The downpours will be triggered above Gorski kotar and then spread across the northeast of the country with strong southwestern winds blowing in heights," reports Meteoinfo Slovenia.
Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and landslides in many areas of Gorenjska and Carinthia.
The Commander of the Civil Protection for Gorenjska, Klemen Šmid, explained that the Škofja Loka area, with the Selška and Poljanska valleys, which were cut off due to closed roads, is currently the most affected. There are also problems in the Municipality of Tržič. "Indeed, the whole of Gorenjska is underwater," Šmid briefly summarized the situation.
A siren in Kamnik declared a general danger from floods and avalanches. In Medvode, citizens are asked not to leave home. According to Radio Slovenia, the Žiri are cut off from the world.
A siren has sounded in Komenda to warn of floods. They also have serious problems in Škofja Loka and around Slovenj Gradec.
Torrents also grew sharply in the Polhov Gradec Dolomites, where, according to the commander of the Dolomites Fire Brigade Association, Andrej Slovša, the situation is alarming.
Heavy rains also caused a lot of problems in the area of Upper Gorenjska, where in some places jumped streams crossed banks and watered buildings. Among other things, the water flooded the cellar of the psychiatric hospital in Begunje. In the municipalities of Radovljica and Žirovniška it was also necessary to evacuate the residents of individual houses.
Due to heavy rainfall, there are numerous facilities under water in Idrija, including industrial plants. ■
