TAP pilot aborts Madeira landing to avoid aircraft on runway
A case that he will have followed for the Aircraft Accident Prevention and Investigation Bureau, which is due to open an investigation to find out the contours and circumstances in which this incident occurred.
According to the Diario, the pilot of the TP-1689 flight, which had the Lisbon-Funchal connection and was due to arrive at Madeira at 18.25, was making the descent down to 3,000 feet to land east-west (from Machico to Santa Cruz) at the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, when he suddenly noticed that there was another aircraft on the runway.
The pilot of the commercial flight was forced to reverse the maneuver, correcting the trajectory and aborting the landing, a situation that caught the passengers by surprise, leaving many of them startled.
In the communication made to the passengers, the commander of the TAP plane made a point of explaining that he had to carry out that maneuver to avoid collision with an unauthorized device that was currently on the track and that he had to wait a few minutes until they were assembled conditions to land safely.
According to the Diario, the pilot of the aircraft did not receive any reports that there was another aircraft on the runway at the time of landing by the control tower at the airport in Madeira, which was delayed responding when questioned about it.
A case he has already followed for the Aircraft Accident Prevention and Investigation Office, which has already opened an investigation to ascertain the circumstances in which everything has occurred. ■
