Half of Bulgaria could be left without electricity in the upcoming winter due to the huge hole in the budgets of energy companies and the lack of fresh money to invest.

A caretaker Economy Deputy PM Ekaterina Zaharieva hit the alarm bell in an exclusive interview for Standart.

According to the minister, the risk is the greatest for northeastern Bulgaria, where the companies are in a very bad financial situation. She said she had already ordered an analysis of the sector and considers emergency measures not to leave whole towns and villages in the dark and cold in the winter.
