Japan foreign visitors up almost 22% in 2016

Japan received a record 24 million foreign visitors in 2016, up 21.8% from the previous year, the Japan National Tourism Organization said.

The agency said China accounted for the most visitors of any country with 6.37 million in 2016, up 28% from the previous year.

East Asia, which includes China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea, accounted for nearly three-quarters of the visitors to Japan, the agency said.

Japan has set a target of 40 million annual visitors in 2020, the year that Tokyo plays host to the Summer Olympic Games.
