New York: Definitive list of 111 projects that will share $4.3 million to help hungry

Grants totaling more than $4.3 million for 111 projects across New York will help prevent hunger and reduce the disposal of food waste though food donation and recycling.

The grants will support efforts by municipalities and organizations, such as pantries and soup kitchens, to help divert scraps for recycling and reduce the amount of organic waste by redirecting excess, edible food to New Yorkers struggling with food insecurity.

Wasted food has significant environmental, social, and economic impacts and these grants help support municipalities and emergency food relief organizations by improving food rescue efforts and diverting food scraps from disposal in landfills.

Reducing the landfilling of food scraps is also recognized as a valuable mitigation measure in the state's ongoing fight against climate change.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will administer the grants.

City of Albany
$225,53500

Address food waste prevention/reduction via outreach and education efforts including: distributing fliers at libraries, parks, and farmers markets; tabling at city events; outreach via social media and website resources; and scheduling presentations by partner organizations to local groups and residents.

City of Cortland
$195,936.63

The creation and implementation of Cortland’s first local food rescue system and volunteer network.

Purchases will include food rescue equipment that will be used to produce valueadded products such as sauces or salsas which have been processed from “past prime” produce donations.

Improved management of donateNYC’s food donation portal, a digital tool that connects food donors and recipients on a neighborhood scale in real time.

Conduct a feasibility study for a City led organics recycling program.

The City will partner with Flower City Pickers, a food rescue organization, to develop and implement a public education program to increase awareness about food waste prevention/reduction as well as food donation/rescue.

Clinton County Health Department (CCHD)

The implementation of a public education/promotion/outreach program targeting residents and focused on home food scraps reduction and recycling.

The program will be a collaborative effort between CCHD and consumer facing partner businesses and organizations.

CCHD will also work with local farmers to establish small scale, centralized food scraps recycling sites to accommodate household food scraps diversion.

Implementation of a project targeting the Institutional Food Preparation and Cafeteria Sector.

The project utilizes data collected from leased tracking systems to develop targeted intervention strategies, and education and outreach programs geared at preventing and reducing institutional cafeteria food waste.

Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA)

Wasted food prevention and reduction outreach and education campaign targeted to recent immigrants and communities that speak English as an additional language.

Through a partnership with the Northeast Waste Management Officials’ Association (NEWMOA), this initiative will involve the development and distribution of handouts, community meetings, social media messaging, exhibits, and short videos in several different languages to help these new and often low income residents understand what they can do to reduce wasted food at home.

Conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to evaluate the viability and effectiveness of implementing a county wide composting facility.

This feasibility study will result in further public education and outreach efforts focused on wasted food prevention and reduction.

Town of Shelter Island

A dual phase project focused on increasing outreach and education on home composting and establishing an improved venison donation system.

Project 1 is the distribution of home composters to residents.

Project 2 is a venison donation program including a countertop and racking system for storing and processing deer meat, and freezers to store meat at distribution facilities and a local food pantry.

Partnership with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County Nutrition Program to host cooking classes at up to four apartment complexes, teaching food waste prevention tips including smart shopping, smart storage, and smart prep.

The Town of Amherst will implement a food scraps drop off and recycling project for Town residents.

The Town will purchase approximately 10,000 kitchen sized organics recycling containers to hand out to interested residents that will contain informational sheets and directions on how to reduce food waste in their home.

Residents will fill those containers and take them to the Farmer's market events on Saturdays from May to November and deposit the material in a Town organics tote.

The Town will then transport that material to a certified organics recycler for processing.

A food waste reduction project involving the Town’s partnership with the Greenburgh Nature Center.

The Greenburgh Nature Center will organize and execute the community outreach campaign as well as provide instruction to residents on how to reduce food waste at the source and recycle food scraps.

Town of Mamaroneck

Coordinated outreach and education program created through collaboration with district school teachers tailored to households, educators, and students, on the “why” and “how” of reducing food waste at the source.

Through this partnership, Teatown will assist the Town with education and outreach regarding the food scraps recycling pilot program.

The Town will establish an organics collection location in a local park and transport the collected food scraps to a nearby commercial compost facility.

Town of Southold

The establishment of a Venison Distribution Program that will give local hunters a facility to drop off harvested deer, where in turn the meat will be donated.

This new facility will facilitate the processing and donation of the harvested deer to local residents and food pantries.

Construction and alterations will be made to existing facilities to allow for smoother and more effective operation, and chest freezers will be purchased to hold processed meat while awaiting distribution.

Town of Tusten

The Town will purchase and install a microdigester and coordination/education (promotions/outreach and project coordination through contracts).

The installation of a microdigester at the Town Barn facility will produce heat/power and a soil fertilizer product.

The microdigester can process 2 tons of food scraps per month from local businesses and voluntary collection points.

Town/Village of Scarsdale

The Town/Village will purchase a collection vehicle specifically dedicated to pick up and transport food scraps from residents’ homes to a composting facility so that it can be recycled into useful compost.

The Town/Village will also develop educational and promotional materials such as banners, truck magnets, flyers, tags for bins and doors, and guides in order to educate, promote, and expand the Scarsdale Food Scrap Recycling Program.

Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA)

UCRRA will promote food waste reduction and home composting by creating a demonstration site at a Kingston facility.

The site will be utilized for educational purposes, hands on demonstrations, classes about composting, and food waste reduction education.

The site will be utilized by community members during facility tours, special classes, or by appointment to learn about home composting and reducing wasted food.

The demonstration site will also provide visitors with tools and materials they can use to implement sustainable behavior changes at home, such as kitchen compost collection containers and eat first boxes.

Village of Clifton Springs

The Village will operate a Food Scrap Composting Pilot.

Funds will be used for 1) capital purchase of containers, bins, totes, organics processing equipment, and facility construction of wash room; and 2) coordination and education including promotional and outreach materials and staffing.

The goals of this pilot program are 1) to reduce the volume of material entering the solid waste stream, by reducing the volume of material at the point of generation, and will include the cooperation of local businesses and phased participation of residential households; and 2) to educate the community about local waste reduction through outreach and education focused on wasted food prevention and reduction.

Village of Croton on Hudson

Establishment of a six month pilot residential food scrap management program.

The Village will designate a Village owned lot –entral to the community and easily accessible by car to maintain six 96 gallon toters (to be handled by a commercial carter) that would be emptied weekly into a transfer vehicle.

The food scraps will be transported to a commercial composting facility being built 8 miles away in Cortlandt Manor, NY.

Village of Montour Falls

The Village will partner with the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Schuyler County to develop a six week lesson plan for four to six Village residents and train them as “Recycling Navigators”.

Recycling Navigators would engage in experiential classroom opportunities which would help them become proficient in communicating about shopping and cooking strategies, composting strategies, and Village recycling and composting policies with their neighbors.

Village of Sleepy Hollow

The Village will introduce a food scraps recycling program that will be available to all residents, despite income or language barriers.

The funding will be used to develop and disseminate an easily understood illustrated education materials that will be used on the Village website, posters, e blasts, reusable shopping bags and recycling instructions.

The Village to purchase a collection truck for food waste collection and totes to establish a voluntary food waste recycling program for residents.

The organics recycling program will involve several collaborations, including partnerships with primary and secondary schools in the Town of Eastchester and the Village, as well as collaboration with local environmental and neighborhood committees.

Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities

Westchester County will hire a consultant to evaluate incorporating food waste recycling in the local solid waste management plan.

The intent of the study is to assess key factors which impact the overall feasibility of a formal food waste diversion and recycling program and which food waste management options would work best in Westchester.

$15,000.00

A Meal and More will use the grant funds to support the salary of the soup kitchen manager/chef.

This individual will be responsible for running the day to day operations of providing meals to the hungry and informing the wider community of their clients’ needs.

Aids Service Center of Lower Manhattan, Inc.
$15,000.00

The Aids Service Center of Lower Manhattan will purchase refrigerated storage units and education and outreach supplies.

The Center will also establish formal working partnerships with food rescue organizations to receive donations, increase capacity to accept rescued food donations, and increase the total number of sites providing food pantry services and clients fed.

Albany County Opportunity, Inc
$15,000.00

Albany County Opportunity, Inc. will fund Site Supervisor and Program Assistant positions that will be responsible for food storage, preventing wasted food, and implementing outreach and education components of their organization.

The organization will also purchase refrigerated food storage equipment and a chest freezer to store additional perishable foods.

Outreach and education supplies, as well as travel costs for staff, will also be purchased to support mobile pantry workshops.

Bed Stuy Campaign Against Hunger, Inc.

Bed Stuy Campaign Against Hunger, Inc. will purchase food pantry inventory management software that will improve stocking and purchasing choices to reduce wasted food and increase the availability of wholesome food for clients.

The software will also improve the pantry customer order fulfillment process and update quality assurance methods.

Bethesda House of Schenectady will hire a Food Pantry Coordinator that will be responsible for the organization’s two food pantries.

The staff person’s responsibilities include inventory management for both pantries, food item ordering, pickup and deliveries, coordinating donations, and establishing processes to reduce wasted food.

Blueprint Geneva, Inc.
$3,800.00

Blueprint Geneva, Inc. will use the grant funds improve their gleaning operations, providing additional food that would normally be plowed under in a field to those in need.

A contractor will be hired for gleaning outreach, record keeping and reporting, training volunteers, and coordinating events.

Broome County Council of Churches, Inc.
$15,00.00

Broome County Council of Churches, Inc. will use the grant funds to cover the travel expenses of their recovery vehicle and be able to transport donated food from over 20 donors daily to mobile market stands.

CAMBA, Inc.

The contract will allow CAMBA, Inc. to purchase additional refrigerated food storage to allow for the safe storage and distribution of more fresh food.

They will also purchase and install shelving at their food pantry for non perishable foods.

Capital Roots, Inc.

Capital Roots, Inc. will hire a coordinator to implement all aspects of the produce rescue program including collections, gleanings, and distributions to bring more fresh produce into their emergency feeding program.

They will also contract with AmeriCorps to build capacity for longterm relationships with wholesalers who are potential donors.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany Herkimer County (CCH)

CCH will fund the Associate Executive Director’s time spent on their food donation program, as well as install refrigerated food storage units to increase the amount of perishable food items that can be donated.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany (Sister Maureen Joyce Food Pantry)
$14,988.81 The Sister Maureen Joyce Food Pantry will hire a food pantry coordinator.

This staff person will coordinate all pantry activities as well as education, outreach, and networking for potential food donors.

This will increase their current community partnerships and fulfill logistics needs of acquiring new donations.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester Steuben (CCS)
$15,000.00

CCS will partner with the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Steuben County to increase donations from farms and cooperatives in the Southern Tier.

A CCE employee will facilitate donation agreements and help design a volunteer gleaning program.

In addition, CCS will purchase crates to store and transport gleaned produce and will promote the gleaning program to farmers and volunteers.

Catholic Charities of Rochester Chemung/Schuyler
$15,000.00

The Catholic Charities of Rochester (Chemung/Schuyler) will purchase and install walk in freezer units.

This will decrease the amount of food wasted at the pantry and allow for the preservation and storage of excess perishable donations.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester Livingston County (CCLC)
$13,500.00

CCLC will hire a Food Donation Coordinator for their pantry to assist with outreach and increasing the amount of donated food.

The contract will also fund travel expenses associated with staff person travel within Livingston County as well as additional refrigerated food storage.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rochester Tompkins/Tioga (CCTT)
$15,000.00

CCTT will hire a staff person to work on Tioga Outreach Center Healthy Food Initiatives.

Their responsibilities will include coordinating volunteers, creating donation connections, streamlining procedures to manage donations at the pantry, coordinating pantry related gleaning events, and providing education and outreach.

Cattaraugus Community Action, Inc. will use the grant funds to purchase a used cargo van to continue and expand efforts to pick up recovered and gleaned foods and reduce the amount of wasted food.

The addition of this staff person will enable the organization to increase the number of times there are able to recover surplus food from farms and the number of deliveries made to community sites.

The Distribution Manager will collect donated food from local businesses and distribute it to food pantries throughout Ulster County, New York.

This funding will allow the organization to expand its services from the northern part of the county to the entire county.

Flower City Pickers, Inc. will hire a Director of Operations to support the all volunteer workforce and coordinate food rescue operations.

Flower City Pickers, Inc. will also hire a Director of Development that will work to improve fundraising efforts and establish partnerships with other food rescue organizations to improve volunteer retention and increase efficiency of food rescue and distribution operations.

Focus Churches of Albany, Inc.

Focus Churches of Albany, Inc. will purchase an additional refrigerator to store perishable produce and other food items.

The contract will also allow Focus Churches of Albany to hire a Produce Food Manager that will coordinate food distribution and lead bi weekly cooking demonstrations to help pantry clients understand how to use produce they receive from the pantry at the Focus Churches of Albany.

Food Pantries for the Capital District, Inc.

The Food Pantries for the Capital District, Inc. will rent a refrigerated box truck to add to the Food Connect Mobile Outreach and Produce Shuttle fleet, a collaborative program between the food bank, local food pantry, and a summer meal site that provides free lunches to children in need throughout the summer.

The additional truck will allow the organization to significantly reduce food waste by ensuring that regular distribution of food is possible and perishable food items do not go to waste simply due to a lack of transportation.

Friends of Night People, Inc. will purchase a vehicle to transport food to and from partner agencies and other food distribution locations.

This project will widen the organization’s reach across Western New York State.

The vehicle will also allow the organization to receive donated and low cost food more regularly, thus increasing their ability to distribute more wholesome food and reduce waste.

Gay Men's Health Crisis, Inc. (GMHC)
$15,000.00

GMHC will use funding to purchase critical kitchen equipment to help the GMHC Food Pantry and Dining Room staff prepare, store, and cook food.

In addition, GMHC will use funding to support its critical nutrition health education programming that helps clients learn how use donated food efficiently, reduce residential food waste, and build healthful, flavorful meals from the ingredients GMHC provides.

Grandma’s Love, Inc.
$15,000.00

Grandma’s Love, Inc. will hire a Project Manager to oversee the implementation and expansion of the current food program.

Grandma’s Love, Inc. provides weekend meals in backpacks to children living with food insecurity.

The Project Manager will conduct outreach and collaboration efforts to increase donations from local businesses and offer classes to the children’s lowincome families on how to best use food from local pantries and other emergency food sources.

Hands Across Long Island

Hands Across Long Island will hire a part time staff person to transport rescued food to their program site.

Harlem Dowling Westside Center for Children and Family Services

The Harlem Dowling Westside Center for Children and Family Services will hire an additional Pantry Assistant.

This will allow the pantry to serve more clients and support them by providing workshops on cooking nutritional meals and stretching limited food budgets.

HFO will contract with a web designer to create a Nutrition Corner on their website.

The Nutrition Corner will allow clients to access nutrition information and simple recipes utilizing the foods that are included in the grocery bags they receive from HFO.

This will help clients efficiently use the food they receive and reduce their household food waste.

Hope Community Services, Inc. will replace inefficient and unreliable freezers with energyefficient walk in freezers.

This will allow the organization to increase the amount of donated meat, fish, and poultry the pantry can distribute by at least 20%.

Hope of Buffalo, Inc.

Hope of Buffalo, Inc. will hire a team leader to manage the food pantry and coordinate food distribution to pantry clients.

The contract will also provide support to the primary pantry volunteers that collect donations from the community and manage the pantry.

Hudson Valley Community Services, Inc.

Hudson Valley Community Services, Inc. will purchase new refrigerators and freezers to safely store fresh food prior to distributing it to pantry clients.

This will increase the organization’s capacity to receive donated food and distribute it to people in need while reducing waste due to spoilage.

Huntington Family Centers, Inc.

The contract will allow the Huntington Family Centers to hire an Emergency Services Coordinator to oversee pantry operations and establish relationships with additional food pantry donors, as well as provide strategies for clients to incorporate more produce into their meals.

The organization will also purchase a laptop to help the Coordinator to manage the program.

Iris House will hire a Nutrition Education and Outreach Specialist to coordinate and conduct community outreach to increase awareness of the pantry and its services, and work with local vendors to create and maintain donation partnerships.

In addition, Iris House will develop and distribute a brochure of its pantry programs and pay for part time use of a van to deliver pantry bags to its satellite locations.

Joseph’s House and Shelter

Joseph’s House and Shelter will hire a Shelter Shift Manager, responsible for the operation of the food pantry during evening, overnight, and weekend shifts.

This person will allow the pantry to expand their typical hours for accepting/coordinating donations and providing food to those in need.

LUW will support a project director to increase partnerships with food donors and manage delivery logistics and meal planning, which will increase LUW’s ability to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in their soup kitchen menu.

To support this work, LUW will purchase a freezer to double the amount of storage space available for pureed produce and meals prepared with fresh food.

Massena Meals on Wheels, Inc.

Massena Meals on Wheels will purchase reusable three compartment meal trays with lids to provide meals to clients more efficiently.

The Mechanicville Area Community Services Center will hire a driver to transport donated produce from farms and stores to the local vulnerable population.

The Center will also establish a new food pantry with a refrigerator, freezer, and shelving.

The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center will hire a part time pantry coordinator to rescue more fresh food for its clients.

The coordinator will train and supervise volunteers, conduct outreach to restaurants and grocery stores, and collaborate with a nutritionist to offer nutritional education and cooking classes on preparing fresh produce.

New York Common Pantry, Inc.

The New York Common Pantry will hire a Rescue Associate to assist with handling and tracking of increased food donations.

In addition, funds will help the Pantry to purchase inventory management software to help it track and allocate the food from the warehouse to multiple emergency feeding sites.

Patchogue Medford Youth and Community Services

Patchogue Medford Youth and Community Services will hire a part time outreach worker to rescue additional fresh food, promote the food pantry program, and conduct educational workshops and cooking demonstrations.

In addition, the pantry will design brochures and distribute mailings to improve the reach and awareness of their services.

Pitney Meadows Community Farm, Inc. will install a wash/pack station and a walk in cooler in order to properly prepare freshly harvested vegetables in a safe reliable manner prior to delivery to food pantries.

The walk in cooler will allow freshly harvested food to remain that way on days that food pantries are not accepting donations.

Work under this contract also includes demolition and installation of concrete floors to support the new wash/pack station and walk in cooler.

Pittsford Food Cupboard
$7,500.00

Pittsford Food Cupboard will purchase needed equipment including shelving units, a commercial refrigerator, construction supplies, and a van rental to transport food supplies.

The refrigerator and associated supplies will significantly increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables that can be stored and distributed.

Project Hospitality, Inc. will fund a Food Rescue and Emergency Feeding Coordinator (FREFC).

The FREFC will help increase food availability at Project Hospitality by recruiting new food recovery sites and food suppliers and overseeing the distribution of rescued food to hungry and homeless clients.

Queens Community House, Inc. will fund a Food Access Coordinator, storage supplies, postage, mailing, and transportation costs.

This project will help increase food availability and outreach in order to reduce food waste and provide more wholesome food to clients.

The Research Foundation of CUNY will hire an additional Assistant Food Educator at Kingsborough Community College.

The Assistant Food Educator will lead cooking demonstrations and workshops to help students understand how to use produce they receive through the campus food donation program and assist with the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables to students.

The Rockland Independent Living Center, Inc. will fund a Food Recovery Assistant and Pantry Coordinator who will pick up, deliver, and distribute food in addition to overseeing the operations.

This project will help increase food availability and outreach in order to reduce food waste and provide more wholesome food to clients.

Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. will hire a Food Programs Assistant who will pick up, deliver, and distribute food to food pantries, their soup kitchen, and a mobile food pantry.

This project will help increase food availability and outreach in order to reduce food waste and provide more wholesome food to clients.

Schenectady Inner City Ministry will purchase a sliding door refrigeration unit to keep donated food fresh until it can be distributed.

This person will manage the processing of rescue food which will result in feeding fresh healthy food to those in need.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Buffalo will hire a dining room manager, fund travel, and purchase a double door commercial freezer.

The dining room manager oversee and assist in daily operations of the dining room and emergency food pantry.

This person will also enhance relationships with regional farmers and grocery stores to increase the amount of food donated.

Funded travel costs will be used to increase food rescue operations and the freezer will allow additional storage of rescued food.

Southside United Housing Development Fund Corporation

The Southside United Housing Development Fund Corporation will hire a Community Connector and purchase van insurance and equipment including a refrigerator, cargo bike, containers, and hand trucks/dollies.

The Community Connector will help receive deliveries, operate the pantry, and pick up harvested and rescued food.

St. John’s Bread and Life Program, Inc.

The St. John’s Bread and Life Program, Inc. will hire a Food Rescue Driver.

The Food Rescue Driver will be responsible for picking up rescued food and delivering it to Bread and Life’s pantry in the agency’s food transport van.

St. overseeing the daily operations of the food service program.

The Albany Damien Center Inc.
$15,000.00

The Albany Damien Center, Inc. will hire a Smart Meals Assistant Chef and a Program Manager to implement a smart meals food outreach program.

This program includes outreach to potential new donors and pickup of food from new donors to the pantry/meal site.

It also includes outreach to donors and preparation of donated foods.

The Fortune Society Inc. will hire staff to establish a composting system to reduce the amount of food that is landfilled and establish relationships with local restaurants to garner additional food donation.

The additional work hours will allow additional food distribution and increased efforts to secure donations.

The Coordinator’s primary responsibility will be to reach out to potential donors to develop partnerships and arrange for additional food donations.

The goal is to provide more food to those that live in the YWCA shelter.
