ERSAT EAV is the first system in Europe to integrate ERTMS with the Galileo satellite navigation and geolocation system and public telecommunications networks.

The technology locates the trains via satellite and interfaces with ERTMS.

By using satellite location and public networks, the system is intended to bring the benefits of ERTMS to lower traffic regional lines with lower installation and operating costs than a full installation.

Launched in 2012 with the support of the Italian and European Space Agencies and the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA), the technology is the result of a collaboration between infrastrucutre manager Italian Railway Network (RFI) and Ansaldo STS.

RFI aims to complete certification of the system in line with EU Agency for Railways standards on a European level, and by National Safety Authority ANSF for domestic operation, with commercial operation of the technology starting in Italy by 2020.
