South Korean companies in top 10 in nine industries

South Korean companies ranked No1 in the global home appliances and shipbuilding industries last year and were among the world's top 10 in seven other sectors, according to CEO Score.

Samsung Electronics, the country's biggest family-run conglomerate, came on top in household appliances like TVs, monitors and white goods, followed by another South Korean firm LG Electronics. CEO Score tracks corporate management data and bases its results on global sales.

Samsung's sales of home appliances last year came to $48.2 billion, according to the data, and LG Electronics recorded $36 billion.

In shipbuilding, Hyundai Heavy Industries took the top spot with $51.9 billion.

South Korean companies ranked in the top 10 included IT, automobiles, steel, shipbuilding machineries, shipping and communications, the data showed.

Samsung Electronics was on the list for smartphones and semiconductors, while POSCO placed No. 2 in the steel industry.

Hyundai Motor and its sister company Kia came in 10th in the auto industry, although they ranked 5th in volume of car sales.
