Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade Surasak Riengkhrua said the department had developed marketing plans for Thai rice in both old and new markets, especially in South Africa and Russia. The plans would be submitted to a new government for consideration, the official said, reports NNT.
If the plans were implemented soon, Thai rice exports in 2014 would be more than eight million tons or a 19.8% increase which was worth $4.8 billion, Mr. Surasak added.
Thailand's rice exports as of 16 December 2013 were 6.4 million tons or $4.2 billion, lower that the target of 8-8.5 million tons. The main cause of the export decrease is the price of Thai rice which is more expensive than its competitors, according to the department. ■
