Iran, Azerbaijan to expedite 'friendship railway'

Iran's minister of communications and information technology said on Thursday that the construction of the railway linking Iran and Azerbaijan will gain momentum and become operational soon.




Mahmoud Vaezi, made the remarks during a visit to the North-South corridor and Qazvin-Rasht railway accompanied by Azerbaijani Minister of Economy Shahin Mustafayev, IRNA reported.

Vaezi, who is also the Iranian head of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission, hoped that the 'friendship railway' linking Iran and Azerbaijan will become operational at the earliest to facilitate trade with several regional countries.

By linking Iran and Azerbaijan railway systems, Baku could easily access countries in Central Asia, the Persian Gulf region and the Indian subcontinent, the minister said.
