Merkel to UK: First you exit, then we'll talk

That was Angela Merkel’s message to Britain on the day it officially told the European Union it was leaving.
The German chancellor also insisted that the rest of the EU would not be sidetracked by the Brexit talks.
The other 27 members were determined to press on with other projects even as they dealt with Britain’s departure, she said.
Speaking at a conference in the German parliament, just a few hours after the U.K. formally notified the European Council of its intention to depart, Merkel praised the EU as “a historically unique success story” — and said she was convinced it would remain one.
“We’ll take care of that,” she stressed. ■
