MPs on Wednesday voted in favour of the plan, which brings the Netherlands more into line with other EU countries.

The measure was included in the coalition agreement.

The new rule will come into effect from January 1 2019. In July, the legislation will be further expanded by a further five-weeks leave, payable at 70% of salary.
