Palestine's foreign ministry statement said the decision "follows the moving of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem," the official Wafa news agency reported.

"When they opened their embassy in Jerusalem there was a need for a decision from our side and this was our decision," Zomlot told the Associated Press.

The U.S. relocated its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 14, with the inauguration coming just months after US President Donald Trump announced the decision in December.
