Thailand, Japan together in railway cooperation

Thailand and Japan will sign a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) on jointly developing railway lines in Thailand, Thai Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said.

The Thai cabinet approved a draft MoC on Tuesday and the signing was agreed to be done in Japan on Wednesday, Prajin was quoted by the National News Bureau of Thailand as saying.

According to the MoC, the two countries will cooperate in constructing a high-speed railway from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, as well as a railway route that connects Kanchanaburi province, Bangkok and Laem Chabang deep-sea port in the eastern coastal province of Chonburi.

In addition, Japan will also help conduct a feasibility study for the planned construction of a railway between Mae Sot district in the northwestern province of Tak and northeastern Mukdahan province, according to the document.
