Venezuela preparing for earthquake with 200,000 people drill

Venezuelan Civil Protection authorities said that preventive measures will be activated to face earthquakes, as part of a plan that includes June 29 national earthquake drill.

According to the deputy minister for Risk Management and Civil Protection, William Martinez, more than 200,000 people will be mobilized in the exercise throughout the country with actions that respond to situations of vulnerability or threat of this natural phenomenon.

Among participants will be firefighters, Civil Protection officials of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), civilian employees of state institutions as well as educational institutions, the official said.

He explained that the evacuation of public and private institutions, schools and communities will be simulated and humanitarian assistance will be implemented on the basis of a manual prepared by the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

Martinez informed that the drill will supervised from a central command post in the Integrated Automated Monitoring System (SIMA)

The preparation to face quakes, he added, also includes a promotion of work through social networks, schools and workshops with journalists.
