Ms. Bertone has a law degree from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and a master's in law from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Ms. Bertone has been with Duke Energy since 2001, when she became assistant general counsel for Energy Services in Houston. She has been general counsel for DEI since February 2006 and also serves as legal director for DEI Paranapanema, a generating company in Brazil. Ms. Bertone has an extensive legal background in South America and the United States, with broad and deep experience in energy issues, corporate matters, litigation and major multi-jurisdictional transactions. Early in her career, she established her own practice in Brazil and worked with major law firms and the federal judiciary system. After moving to the United States and working for the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie in Chicago, Bertone returned to South America when the financial markets were being established and companies were being privatized. In Brazil and Argentina, she was the lead lawyer for pioneer projects, such as the first bilateral sale of power in Brazil and the first pre-payment of gas in Argent ■
