Smurfit-Stone: president and COO to resign

Creve Coeur, Mo., USA - October 28, 2010, Creve Coeur, Mo., USA - Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, a containerboard and corrugated packaging producer, announces that its president and chief operating officer Steven J. Klinger has announced his intent to resign from the company, effective December 31.

Mr. Klinger is president and chief operating officer for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. He also is a member of the company’s board of directors. Mr. Klinger joined Smurfit-Stone in May 2006 from Georgia-Pacific, where he most recently served as executive vice president of packaging, pulp and global procurement.

During his 23-year career at Georgia-Pacific, he provided strategic leadership that was marked by numerous achievements. Over a six-year period beginning in 2000, Mr. Klinger led a team that transformed the packaging business at Georgia-Pacific from industry-average returns on assets and returns on sales to industry-leading performance.
