The first day of the 10-day strike called by different farmers' union turned violent at several places, catching the district administration and police unprepared.
The protests started early in the morning with stick-wielding members of different farmers' union blocking roads from villages to the city - the route taken by morning suppliers of vegetables and milk.
Milk vans, including that of Sanchi brand Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited, were stopped and the milk spilt on the road, despite protest from the suppliers at Manglia, Rau and Nanda Nagar area.
The protesters camped in front of the Choithram Mandi raising slogans and preventing fellow farmers from selling their produce to the traders.
Many farmers moved in two-wheelers and jeeps inside the mandi and exchanged heated words with traders as the forced sellers to down their shutters.
Sources said the young brigade of farmers had camped at the mandi in the night in a bid to initiate their action early in the morning, when the suppliers reach the market. â–
