Japan temporary suspends imports of live poultry, poultry product from France, Germany

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries took measures to temporarily suspend the import of live poultry and poultry meat from Au Lan Province, France, on Tuesday.

The French Livestock Hygiene Authority has provided information that a highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N8 subtype) outbreak has been confirmed at a backyard poultry farm in Au Lan, France.

In order to take all possible measures to prevent the invasion of this disease into Japan with the information provided by the French Livestock Hygiene Authority, live poultry and poultry from Blotzheim Province on Tuesday. Imports of meat, poultry eggs, etc. have been suspended.

The reason for stopping the import of live poultry, poultry meat, poultry eggs and products from the country or region of occurrence is to prevent live poultry raised in Japan from being infected with the virus, not for food hygiene.

On Thursday the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries took measures to temporarily suspend the import of poultry meat from Berlin and Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N8 subtype) have been confirmed on poultry farms in Berlin and Bavaria, Germany, and the restricted area set for the outbreak in Bavaria is adjacent to Baden-Württemberg. Information was provided by the German Livestock Hygiene Authority.

In order to take all possible measures to prevent the invasion of this disease into Japan after receiving information from the German Livestock Hygiene Authority the import of poultry products has been suspended.

The reason for suspending the import of live poultry, poultry meat, poultry eggs and products from the country or region of origin is to prevent live poultry bred in Japan from being infected with the virus. Not for food hygiene.
