Overall beef exports totaled $44.4 billion in 2017. That dollar amount represents a 2.7% increase for global beef shippers over the five-year period starting in 2013.

Year over year, the value of international beef sales accelerated by 7.7% from 2016 to 2017.

Among continents, European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported beef during 2017 with shipments valuated at $14 billion or roughly one-third (31.5%) of the global total.

In second place was Latin America (excluding Mexico) plus the Caribbean at 21.8%, ahead of the 20.2% portion of worldwide beef shipments originating from North America.

Trailing those continental sources were beef exporters from Oceania led by Australia and New Zealand via a 17.6% share of total beef exports. Smaller percentages track back to Asia (8.1%) and Africa (0.7%).

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefixes are 0201 for fresh or chilled beef and 0202 for frozen beef.

The value of exported fresh or chilled beef amounted to $23.1 billion in 2017, eclipsing the $21.3 billion for frozen beef. The latter accounts for 48.1% of overall global exports compared to 51.9% for fresh or chilled beef during 2017.

And while the value of fresh or chilled beef exports increased by 7.3% from 2013 to 2017, the comparable metric for frozen beef shipments slipped by -1.9%.

The 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of fresh, chilled or frozen beef during 2017:

United States: $6.2 billion (14% of total beef exports)
Australia: $5.8 billion (13%)
Brazil: $5.1 billion (11.4%)
Netherlands: $3.1 billion (7%)
India: $3 billion (6.8%)
Ireland: $2.2 billion (4.9%)
New Zealand: $2 billion (4.6%)
Canada: $1.6 billion (3.7%)
Uruguay: $1.52 billion (3.43%)
Poland: $1.51 billion (3.41%)
Germany: $1.4 billion (3.3%)
Argentina: $1.3 billion (2.9%)
Paraguay: $1.15 billion (2.58%)
Mexico: $1.13 billion (2.55%)
France: $1.05 billion (2.4%)

The listed 15 countries shipped 86.1% of all beef exported in 2017 by value.
