Record vegetable harvest in Russia in 2015

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture reported a record vegetable harvest in 2015, totalling 16.1 million tonnes, which is 12.3% more than the average of the last five years.Article continues below
"Despite the difficult macroeconomic conditions early in the year, with drought, floods and fires in various parts of the Russian Federation, in 2015 we have managed to grow and harvest a relatively large agricultural production."
The total vegetable harvest has increased to 16.1 million tonnes (in 2014 it was 15.5 million tonnes), which is 12.3% more than the average of the last five years.
As of 24 December 2015, the total harvest of greenhouse vegetables amounted to 470,900 tonnes and consisted mainly of cucumbers - 337 thousand tonnes, tomatoes - 123,400 tonnes and other vegetables - 10,500 tonnes.
There has also been an increase in the production of potatoes, with a total of 33.6 million tonnes harvested, which is 15.9% more than the average of the last five years (in 2014 it was 31.5 million tonnes).
The harvest of berries and fruit crops stood at 2.9 million tonnes, which is 9% more than the five-year average (in 2014 it reached 3,000,000 tonnes). ■ What to read next
