Record year for banana exports from Costa Rica

CORBANA (Corporación Bananera Nacional) announced that 2016 was a record year for banana exports.

The volume exported in 2016 totaled 120 million cartons (weighing 18.14 kg).

The previous record was 116 million boxes in 1998 and 1999 with banana plantations representing nearly 50,000 hectares.

By 2016 plantations covered only 43,000 hectares, which refutes a decline in productivity.

Also record level for receipts that reach $986 million, more than thirty countries around the world have imported bananas from Costa Rica.
