UK cheese exports continue to grow

EU destinations accounted for ten out of twelve of the largest export markets for UK cheese in 2016.

The only two non-EU countries to make the top dozen were USA and Saudi Arabia.

According to data from Comtrade, overall cheese exports in 2016 were 163k tonnes, of which 91k tonnes was cheddar or cheddar variants, ssays AHDB.

The chart below shows the top destinations, ranked by total tonnage. Bars outlined in red are for non-EU countries.

While the EU may dominate the overall volume of cheese exports from the UK, we are seeing growth in sales to non-EU destinations.

Over the last couple of years, sales into Saudi Arabia, USA, Lebanon, Australia and the UAE have all shown continual growth totalling around 7.5k tonnes of cheese.
