Offering a starting salary of £43,000 rising to £56,000 for store managers, Aldi said it was aiming to attract "ambitious applicants with a background in management".

Aldi, which said it had around 100 store manager and 450 assistant store manager vacancies currently available, claimed to be "the best supermarket employer in Britain", due to its hourly-rate employees receiving at least £8.40 or £9.45 per hour for those in Greater London.

This compares, for example, with the "national living wage" of £7.20 that will be introduced in April.
