Caledonia Mining suffers another fatality at flagship Blanket mine

Staff Writer |
Caledonia Mining said it has experienced another fatality at its flagship Blanket mine in Zimbabwe, and said an enquiry into the incident is underway.

The accident occurred in number 6 shaft area of the mine last Friday, the miner said.

"Management has notified the Minister of Mines & Mining Development and the Inspector of Mines and will provide all the necessary assistance to the Ministry of Mines Inspectorate Department in its enquiry into this incident," said the company.

"Until such a time as the outcome of this enquiry has been reached, no further details can be released. The directors and management of Caledonia and Blanket express their sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased," Caledonia added.

The latest fatality follows on from May 12, when the company said a fatality had occurred at the Eroica ore body. Whilst that accident in May led to operations being suspended, Caledonia did not confirm whether operations had continued following the latest incident.

"We take the safety of our employees very seriously at Blanket, so we are very disappointed with this fatality. I join with my colleagues in expressing our sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased," said Chief Executive Steve Curtis.
