Morinaga to market yogurt in China

The Japanese company is teaming up with the Want Want China group. A subsidiary of the Taiwanese food manufacturer is building a plant in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, where Morinaga plans to help build production lines and supply technology for making dairy products. Starting later this year, the Morinaga logo will be added to the yogurt and dessert products made there and sold in Shanghai, Beijing and other major metropolitan areas.

It sees ample room for growth despite stiff competition. The yogurt market, in particular, is expected to expand rapidly as health awareness spreads among the affluent.
Japanese rival Meiji, which has been in the Chinese yogurt market since 2013, is broadening its territory to southern and inland regions on the back of strong sales in such eastern cities as Shanghai. ■
