RWE has announced the preferred suppliers for all main components of Thor, Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm.

The wind farm, with a planned capacity of over 1,000 MW, will be built in the North Sea and is expected to generate enough renewable energy to power over a million Danish households.
The German steel company, EEW SPC, and Chinese-based company, Dajin Offshore, have been selected to manufacture the 72 monopile foundations, each weighing approximately 1,500 tonnes, with Wood Thilsted designing them.
Jan De Nul Group will provide the vessel for foundation installation, expected to take place in 2025.
Siemens Gamesa, a Spanish wind turbine manufacturer, has been selected to provide the 72 offshore wind turbines (SG 14-236 DD). 36 of the turbines will feature CO2-reduced steel towers, which ensures a reduction of at least 63% in the tower steel plates compared to conventional steel.
The GreenerTower is a significant step towards producing even more sustainable wind power.
Fred.Olsen Windcarrier, a Norwegian offshore wind installation company, will provide the vessel for the turbine installation, with the installation works scheduled to start in 2026 from the Port of Esbjerg in Denmark.
Both RWE and Siemens Gamesa intend to utilize local expertise in the harbor as well as offshore during construction and commissioning.
Thor is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027, and it is a significant step in Denmark’s journey towards sustainable energy.
Hellenic Cables and Jan De Nul Group have been selected to manufacture and install 60km of export cables and 200km of inter-array cables for the offshore wind farm.
The joint venture will also manufacture and install the onshore cables from the landfall to the onshore substation, which will be built by Siemens Energy.
Construction activities for the onshore substation are expected to start soon. HSM Offshore Energy will handle the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning of the offshore high voltage substation and its jacket foundation, with installation scheduled for 2025 and commissioning and testing in 2026. ■
