Westinghouse enhances Ukraine nuclear safety with Beacon contract
BEACON is a state-of-the-art product providing crucial reactor measurements for required safety margins.
BEACON is successfully being used at South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3.Expanding the use to the Zaporizhia nuclear plant demonstrates Energoatom’s confidence in the software to calculate the detailed power distribution for the reactor core in real time using input from plant instrumentation.
At today’s contract signing with Energoatom President Yuriy O. Nedashkovsky, Westinghouse president and CEO Danny Roderick stated, “Westinghouse continues to help Ukraine increase domestic energy output while enhancing safety and security, providing for Ukrainians’ electricity needs and further diversifying fuel and components supply to the country. We are providing the country energy independence through diversification.”
BEACON, a proprietary reactor core monitoring system which helps ensure safe reactor operations, has successfully been in operation since 1990 and is currently being used by over 50 nuclear power plants in eight countries around the world.
The BEACON system has well over 400 reactor years of operational experience. ■
