BHP Billiton posted loss of $6.4 billion

That loss includes $7.7 billion of exceptional items (after tax) related to an impairment charge of $4.9 billion against the carrying value of the Onshore U.S. assets; $2.2 billion for the financial impacts of the Samarco dam failure on the group’s income statement; and $570 million for global taxation matters.
The company remains on track to deliver $2.2 billion of gains.
BHP Billiton achieved $437 million of productivity gains, or $2.0 billion excluding the impact of grade decline at Escondida.
Further improvements continue to be realised across the portfolio and the company remains on track to deliver $2.2 billion of gains, or $3.8 billion excluding the impact of grade decline at Escondida, over the two years to the end of the 2017 financial year. ■
