Employment in Germany up 0.5% in December on year earlier

In December 2016, roughly 43.5 million persons resident in Germany were in employment according to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Compared with December 2015, the number of persons in employment increased by 238,000.
Although employment rose further compared with one year earlier, the increase slowed notably in the second half-year. Having amounted to 1.1% in June 2016, the year-on-year rate of change was down to 0.5% in December.
Roughly 1.5 million people were unemployed in December 2016, 359,000 fewer than a year earlier.
According to provisional results of the employment accounts, the number of persons in employment fell by 189,000, or 0.4%, in December 2016 on the previous month. The decrease on November was slightly larger than the relevant average of the past five years (–183,000 people).
After seasonal adjustment, that is, after the elimination of the usual seasonal fluctuations, the number of persons in employment increased by 22,000, or 0.1%, in December 2016 month on month.
In addition to the first calculation of the number of persons in employment for the reference month of December 2016, the provisional monthly employment results were recalculated for the year 2016. This involved taking account of all sources of employment statistics that had additionally become available until the time of calculation.
For the monthly employment figures, the recalculation resulted in year-on-year change rates which, for October and November, are by 0.1 percentage points lower than the results published earlier.
The annual result of 43,4 million persons in employment (national concept) and the year-on-year change rate of 1,0%, which were communicated in the press release of 2 January 2017 (No. 01/17), remained unchanged despite the recalculation.
Results of the labour force survey show that there were 1.54 million unemployed in December 2016. Compared with the previous month, the number decreased by 162,000 or 9.9%.
Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed stood at 1.68 million. It was down by approximately 27,000 people from the previous month. The adjusted unemployment rate was 3.9% in December 2016. ■
