Initial jobless claims 293,000, producer price index up 0.5%

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits dropped to 293,000 last week for the first time in 19 months.

The Labor Department said its producer price index for final demand rose by 0.5 percent in September after climbing by 0.7 percent in August.

Compared to the same month a year ago, producer prices surged by 8.6 percent in September compared to an 8.3 percent spike in August.
