In April 2016, the volume of sales in Hungarian retail shops increased by 5% according to raw data compared to the same period of the previous year.

This is according to the Hugarian Central Statistical Office. According to calendar adjusted data - mainly due to the Easter effect - the volume growth was 6.7%. Adjusted for calendar effects, the volume of sales rose by 3.9% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 11.3% in non-food retail shops and by 3.5% in automotive fuel retailing.
In January–April 2016, the volume of sales – also according to calendar adjusted data – was 4.9% higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
In April 2016 sales in the national retail trade network as well as in mail order and internet retailing were HUF 781 billion at current prices. Food, drinks and tobacco stores accounted for 47% of all retail sales, while the relevant figures for non-food retail shops and the network of petrol stations were 38% and 15% respectively.
In April 2016, compared to the same period of the previous year, adjusted for calendar effects the volume of sales in the national retail trade network as well as in mail order and internet retailing increased by 6.7%. The data of the second estimate deviated by +0.3 percentage point from the data published in the first estimate.
The volume of sales increased by 3.9% in specialized and non-specialized food retailing. The volume of sales grew by 4.2% in non-specialized food and beverages shops accounting for 77% of food retailing and by 4.1% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores.
The turnover of non-food retailing increased by 11.3%. Sales rose in textiles, clothing and footwear shops (21%), non-specialized shops (8.9%), furniture and electrical goods stores (8.4%), books, computer equipment and other specialized stores (8.2%) as well as in pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics shops (6.3%).
The volume of sales in second hand goods shops fell by 9.4%. The volume of mail order and internet retailing involving a wide range of goods rose by 31%, continuing a multi-year expansion. The volume of sales in automotive fuel stations rose by 3.5%.
Sales in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories stores – not regarded as retailing by the European Statistical System – increased by 5.8%. ■
