475 new deaths in Italy, 43,000 citizens violated lockdown

Italy today reported 475 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, the highest one day official toll of any nation since the first case was detected in China.

Total deaths in Italy have reached 2,978, more than half of all the cases recorded outside China, while the number of infections reached 35,713.

Italian authorities have pressed charges against more than 40,000 people for violating the lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus, according to figures from the interior ministry.

Police stopped and checked 700,000 citizens between 11 to 17 March, 43,000 of whom were found to have violated the decree, which also orders the closing of shops, bars, restaurants, gyms and swimming pools.
