Researchers are attempting to identify genes that may make people susceptible to bipolar disorder. However, illness doesn't have to appear, regardless of family history. It can be triggered by some very stressful situation like somebody's death or any kind of lost. People from families with no recorded bipolar disorder are less likely to get that disorder.
Besides people who have history of bipolar disorder in family, second critical group are highly sensitive or highly creative people. In that group belong writers, artists, musicians, and painters - every one that uses fantasy and creativity in their jobs. In the third group are people who are very responsible by their nature and want to execute "perfect", "on time", "flawlessly", like businessmen. Thus, it's not uncommon to call bipolar disorder or manic-depression physicists "CEO's disease".
In a phase of depression people feel very sad, have problems with concentration, they can't see "light in the end of a tunnel", they are anxious and have quilt because of things they did a long time ago. Feelings of hopelessness overflow them, they have problems with sleeping, mostly with appetite, and if that phase last long they start to think about suicide.
In manic phase people are very sociable. They are happy, satisfied and full of power to do whatever they want or need. Everything makes them happy. They are very communicative, full of themselves and happy with their life. Day is too short for them and it should last 25 hour, at least. They are happy with their past, remembering only good things, and have great expectations from the future. They have everything under control and like to cheer their friends, family and co-workers. On the other hand, this cheerful mood can turn to pathological irritability or transience sorrow.
In that phase they are ironic, quarry, blame others and confront with everybody. In the easier shapes of mania people think quickly, in the hardest shape their brain jumps from one die to another. They notice even the most insignificant detail and comment it; exaggerate their values, and they are absolutely sure that they have spotless character. Such people can be dangerous for their co-workers, family and friends if they don't show the understanding for their ideas.
Manic people may start more jobs at the same time, which they don't finish or may finish but with great loses. When hospitalised they think of medical stuff like enemy, but after treatment they are very calm like nothing happened.
Like we said, bipolar disorder or manic-depression is a state characterized by alternating pattern of emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression), and both phases need to be treated by medicaments. If patient is under medical care it can work and live normally. Unfortunately, those people may decide to stop taking the drugs what leads to depressive or manic phase again. If that is the case, bipolar disorder starts again.
Statistical data show that 2 to 3 million Americans suffer from bipolar disorder. Less than 50 percent of them have correct diagnosis and treatment, and even 20 percent of cases end up in a suicide. Under the provisions of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 employers cannot ask prospective employees if they have a history of mental illness or have been treated for such illness. ■
