Coronavirus cases continue to surge in South Asia and Southeast Asia as India reported 95,735 new cases and the death toll surpassed 75,000 in the country on Thursday, while Indonesia reported 3,861 new cases.
India's coronavirus situation continues to worsen as the total death toll due to the pandemic crossed 75,000, reaching 75,062, and the tally rose to 4,465,863, showed the health ministry's latest data.
During the past 24 hours, as many as 95,735 new COVID-19 cases and 1,172 deaths were registered across the country.
Currently there are 919,018 active cases in the country, while 3,471,783 have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals, showed the ministry's data.
The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 3,861 within one day to 207,203, with the death toll adding by 120 to 8,456, the health ministry said.
According to the ministry, 2,310 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 147,510.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 248,947 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,821 new cases.
The DOH said that the number of recoveries also rose to 186,058 after 563 more patients have recovered.
The DOH added that 80 more patients have died from the viral disease, bringing the death toll to 4,066.
Bangladesh reported 1,892 new COVID-19 cases and 41 new deaths, making the tally at 332,970 and death toll at 4,634, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 233,550, including 2,746 new recoveries, said the DGHS.
According to the official data, the COVID-19 fatality rate in Bangladesh is now 1.39 percent and the current recovery rate is 70.14 percent.
South Korea reported 155 more cases of COVID-19 as of 12:00 a.m. Thursday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 21,743.
The daily caseload stayed below 200 for eight straight days, but it continued to grow in triple digits since Aug. 14.
Two more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 346. The total fatality rate stood at 1.59 percent.
Malaysia reported 45 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the national total to 9,628, the health ministry said. ■
