The new figures, which push the total number of deaths confirmed by the NHS to almost 9,000, up from 7,978 on Thursday.

It comes as Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said on Thursday that admissions into intensive care looked to be reaching a plateau.

Earlier, the four separate NHS bodies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland announced their individual counts.

Those UK-wide figures and NHS statistics are collated differently from the Department of Health and Social Care's official figures.

NHS England announced 866 new deaths - the highest daily increase since the outbreak began.

It brings the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in the country to 8,114.

NHS Scotland confirmed a further 48 deaths, bringing the total to 495, while there were another 10 confirmed in Northern Ireland, taking the total there to 93.

In Wales, the toll rose by 29, health officials said, bringing the total to 315.
