Six others involved in the same case were given life sentences, and the remaining five people were given jail times ranging from two years to 15 years, according to the provincial Higher People's Court.

The gang was convicted of purchasing heroin from the border area in southwest Yunnan Province and transporting it back to Sichuan to sell. Altogether 70 packages of heroin weighing more than 23 kg were confiscated by police, the court said.

The death sentence will be handed over to the Supreme People's Court for approval.
