Fire breaks out in steam cracker at Borealis, Sweden plant

A blaze ignited in a steam cracker at the Borealis production plant in Stenungsund, Sweden on Saturday, prompting a response from a local fire brigade, the manufacturer of polyolefins, chemicals, and fertilizer products announced Sunday.

The fire started in a compressor in the cracker, according to coverage by ICIS. The chemical industry intelligence service said the cracker can produce 625,000 tn/yr of ethylene and 200,000 tn/ur of propylene.

“Borealis is working closely and openly with the authorities to investigate the root cause of the incident, and will take ever action to prevent a similar accident from happening again,” the company said in a release.

No one was injured during the fire.
