It proved so strong that the pilots on Flight ROU1566 had to put on oxygen masks and issue a Pan Pan, the second-highest level of emergency.

The Vancouver-bound Air Canada Rouge, carrying 245 passengers and 8 crew, turned around after 37 minutes back towards Montreal.

On landing, the crew finally discovered the cause of the stink a shipment of durian in the forward cargo compartment, reports Flight Global.

The fruit is most commonly found in south-east Asia and is known for its incredibly bad smell. It's banned in some places, including Singapore's subway system.
