The Met’s “danger to life” rain alert has been expanded across northern England and Wales, with two months of rain to fall in 24 hours.

It warns cities, towns and villages in the warning area, which includes York and Greater Manchester, are “likely” to see flooding.

It adds that “damage to buildings” is also likely on Saturday and Sunday, with “fast flowing or deep flooding” causing a danger to life.

And it states there is a “good chance communities will be cut off by flooded roads”, with power cuts also likely.
