Robles, minister of Agrarian Development and Urban Planning under former President Enrique Pena Nieto (2012-2018), was arrested after a 12-hour court hearing and brought to a women's prison in Mexico City.

She will remain in jail for two months while under investigation, according to Robles' lawyer Xavier Olea.

Robles is accused of "wrongful exercise of public service" for the alleged theft of 5 billion pesos (257 million U.S. dollars) in public money.

The former minister has denied the charges and her defense team regards the case as "political persecution."
