A fire erupted on the ship and has been contained as of Friday evening. However, the vessel remained disbanded and adrift in the Indian Ocean halfway between Sri Lanka and the Malacca Strait, said Sri Lanka's Navy Spokesman Captain Indika de Silva.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said the vessel has 28 crew members and was 787 km from Port Blair, the entry point for visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Silva told local journalists that the container ship had left Colombo and was en-route to Singapore when it fell into distress.

He added all merchant vessels nearby had been warned of the distressed ship, while instructions had been issued to provide necessary assistance.
