Minister Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation in Egypt visited Maspero metro station site of the Cairo Metro Line 3 phase 3 Project, where the EIB has provided fund worth EUR 600 million for the project.

The whole Metro Line 3 aims to reduce travel times for residents and reduce traffic congestion, as well as carbon emissions and other pollutants in Cairo.
Cairo is a home to population of about 20 million inhabitants and the largest city in Africa. The city faces serious problems in terms of organizing urban mobility, road traffic congestion, heavy air pollution, the saturation of parking spaces and, consequently, accidents.
The whole Metro Line 3 aims to reduce travel times for residents and reduce traffic congestion, as well as carbon emissions and other pollutants in Cairo (Reduction of 9.3 Mt of CO2 emissions during the operating period).
The first 4.3 km-long phase of Line 3 was commissioned in February 2012 and the second 7.7 km-long phase was commissioned in May 2014.
Phase 3 expands line 3 westwards. It will connect the city center (Abassia) to the West Bank (Giza) via two branches after crossing the Nile through Zamalek Island to the West bank of the Nile: one towards Rod El Farag Corridor in the North, and the other towards Cairo University in the South.
Maspero station is part of the first section (3a) of the third phase of line 3, which includes 4 underground stations. The specificity of Maspero station is that it is the last underground station before the line crosses the Nile. The three sections of phase 3 of line 3 comprise 15 stations in total. ■
Under an intense surge of arctic air, Friday morning will begin with the coldest temperatures so far this season across much of the central and eastern U.S. with blustery conditions and a piercing wind chill.
