Verdi confirmed airport strikes in Germany
Staff Writer | January 10, 2019
The Verdi trade union, the most important in the German service sector, has confirmed Wednesday that a strike will be held this Thursday at several airports in the country to demand wage improvements for security workers.Article continues below
The demonstration is a follow-up to one held on Monday at the Tegel and Schonefeld airports in Berlin and will include those in Düsseldorf and Cologne-Bonn in the western region and Stuttgart in the southern part of the country.
It is expected, according to local media, that there will be strong traffic restrictions, and the airport association ADV pointed out that some 110,000 passengers could be affected.
The strike is a consequence of the lack of results in negotiations with the Federal Association of Air Safety Companies (BDLS) and the absence of a response from that entity after the actions of the 7th.
The BDLS refuses to accept the union's request to increase the basic wage from 17.12 to 20 euros per hour for more than 23,000 employees responsible for passenger, personal cargo and cargo screening.
Verdi stated that other strikes are not ruled out if a solution to the problem is not found in another round of meetings with the BDLS executives. ■ What to read next
